DENPASAR, NETIZENBALI.com - We get that people rarely use half the stuff that filled their house, or they’re into minimalism now (that’s great, congrats), or they’re traveling to Bali and it’s time for them to fly back home and they just don’t have the space to put some of their stuff in their luggage, we get it and we have a great solution to that.

People can now “Drop and Donate” their good quality stuff by our office in Jalan Danau Tamblingan No. 53, Sanur, Denpasar Timur, 80228, Bali, Indonesia and we’ll find new loving homes for them at our Charity Flea Market.

For the past few months, Scholars of Sustenance has been holding the monthly Charity Flea Market as one of our fundraising events to give a solution to the problem, which is good quality stuff going to the landfill just because people don’t want them anymore.

Through this monthly event, SOS is promoting the Circular Economy and allowing local vendors to grow with what we’re doing there, creating a more sustainable way of life. Just like what we’re doing with surplus food, through our Charity Flea Market, the good quality stuff that people donated to us gets to be loved by someone else, preventing them from going to the landfill.

The stuff that is donated to us are mostly clothes, books, accessories, toys, and some are home appliances. They get sorted out before they get displayed at the flea market, so we’ll know which are good to sell and which are not. Although most of them are in very good condition, people get to buy them for a very good price, given that we want them to find new homes ASAP instead of ending up in the landfill creating problems.

As we get a lot of clothes donated to us, just like what we do with surplus food, we want to divert them from the landfill as textile waste not only takes a very long time to decompose, it also produces greenhouse methane gas and releases toxic chemicals and dyes to our groundwater and soil. We make sure that the good condition ones go to the Charity Flea Market and the rest go to the nearest animal shelter so they can use them for warmth.

What we’re doing here is just a temporary effort and what we need is to find a sustainable way for the things that we use on a daily basis, so they can be eco friendly and also us to be more environmentally conscious when buying or throwing things away. Hit the brakes on our usual lifestyle and find a way to appreciate our stuff again, either by upcycling them or giving them to people in need. (NB/*)
