NetizenBali.com - Josua Hutagalung, a 33-year-old man from Sumatra, probably wasn’t best pleased when the 2.1kg space rock crashed through his veranda’s tin roof. However, he praised his lucky stars when it made him a millionaire.

The meteorite ended up buried 15cm deep in soil next to his house. Having presumably checked that it didn’t contain a tiny Superman, he posted pictures on Facebook, causing quite a stir.

The meteorite is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old and is classified as CM1/2 carbonaceous Chondrite, making it worth around $1.85m.

Hutagalung sold the rock to a specialist collector in the US and, while he wouldn’t reveal the exact price, he indicated that it was over $1.3m - approximately 30 years salary for the coffin-maker.

He plans to use the money to build a new church for his town, which is one way of thanking the heavens.

According to the Sun, fragments of the meteorite had been put up for sale on eBay for 757 pounds sterling per gram, valuing the rock at nearly 1.4 million pounds sterling, or $1.85 million in total. [Net.]
