Ni Wayan Sukar, sea salt maker in West Bali

Jembrana, NetizenBali.com - Ni Wayan Sukar, is one of the few remaining Bali sea salt farmers. She starts his day early in the morning, walking down the black sand beach typical of the Jembrana Regency, West Bali.

In Gumbrih village, you will find a 60-year-old woman as the third generation who still farming or processing sea salt in traditional-way.

As Ni Wayan Sukar explains in the interview with netizenbali.com the process of making sea salt it begin to collect crystal-shaped sand into piles.
When dry, he rakes the top layer of sand and collects it together, then dumps it all in a huge wooden box inside of his workshop.

She then called 'nyosor' or pours sea water into the large box, which seeps through the salted-sand, increasing the concentration of salt in the water. The highly salt-concentrated water then pours out from the bottom of the box.

When she has enough salt water, Ni Wayan will pour it into placed on a heating iron for the salting process using fire with a wooden log. Here, on a sunny day, the water evaporates leaving salt crystals for him to scrape up, package and finally sell.

" I persevered it from generation to generation, since my one-deeply honered as a family (penglingsir) was still alive. There used to be seventeen people who made salt like this, now I'm just alone," she said.
