Indonesia Unveils New Red-and-White Passport Design

JAKARTA, NETIZENBALI.COM – In a significant update, Indonesia has introduced a new passport design featuring the national colors of red and white, replacing the previous bluish-green cover used since 2014. The new design was unveiled on the 79th Independence Day, aiming to enhance both security and cultural representation.
The Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, stated that the redesigned passport meets the latest international standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Annex 9 on facilitation. “This standard requires periodic updates to passport security features to prevent forgery and data tampering,” he said.
The new passport includes advanced security features such as a heat-resistant cover and pages displaying traditional fabric patterns, showcasing Indonesia’s regional cultural elements1. The cover prominently features the Garuda symbol with a batik design, using printing technology similar to that of banknotes, making it difficult to counterfeit.
The new passport design will officially come into effect on August 17, 2025, with a mechanism in place for transitioning from the old green design to the new red one. (NB)
