Man detained on drug charges gets to tie the knot at Denpasar police station

NetizenBali.com, DENPASAR - A Balinese man who has been detained for drug-related offenses got to marry the love of his life despite being locked up, with the ceremony taking place at Denpasar Police Headquarters.
Denpasar Police Chief Comr. Bambang Yugo Pamungkas confirmed earlier today that the traditional wedding ceremony took place inside the headquarters’ lobby. A Hindu priest led the solemn procession, local outlets reported.
“[The groom] is a detainee in a narcotics case,” said Bambang, who also mentioned that the man, identified by his initials IWBK, had already been charged by Denpasar prosecutors.
Bambang explained that the Denpasar Police had facilitated the wedding ritual (locally known as pawiwahan) as it had been scheduled before IWBK became a criminal suspect. The bride reportedly was already pregnant when IWBK was arrested late last year.
Following the ceremony’s conclusion earlier today (a news source reported that it started at 10:40am and concluded one hour later), IWBK was immediately brought back to continue his confinement, while the bride, identified as NKP, returned home to her family.
“We gave this facility because it is their right. It is the right for detainees and all citizens to marry,” said Bambang.
IWBK, 34, was reportedly arrested on Dec. 3 last year with 163 grams of crystal meth and 30 ecstasy pills in his possession. (NB/ Coconutsbali)
