Journalists Trade Pens for Shovels in Bali Mangrove Conservation Drive
DENPASAR, NETIZENBALI.COM – Journalists in Bali briefly set aside their notebooks and cameras to take part in an environmental initiative aimed at protecting the island’s fragile coastal ecosystem.
Members of Serikat Media Siber Indonesia (SMSI) Bali joined a mangrove planting campaign at the Tahura Ngurah Rai Mangrove Arboretum Park on Monday, planting hundreds of mangrove seedlings as part of a broader effort to restore coastal habitats.
The social action, dubbed “Wartawan Peduli Mangrove” (Journalists Care for Mangroves), was attended by Bali’s Deputy Governor I Nyoman Giri Prasta along with journalists, environmental activists and community members.
Organizers said the activity was more than a ceremonial event, emphasizing the importance of long-term commitment to protecting Bali’s coastal environment.
“Mangroves are essential for protecting the shoreline, preventing erosion and supporting marine biodiversity,” a representative of SMSI Bali said during the event.
Bali’s mangrove forests play a critical role in shielding coastal communities from rising sea levels and extreme weather while also serving as important habitats for fish, birds and other wildlife.
Deputy Governor Giri Prasta praised the initiative, noting that collaboration between media organizations, government and local communities is vital in preserving the island’s natural environment.
The event also highlighted the role of journalists not only as information gatekeepers but also as active participants in community-driven environmental efforts.
Through initiatives like this, SMSI Bali hopes to encourage broader public awareness about environmental conservation while reinforcing the media’s role in promoting sustainable development on the island. (NB/ wan)
