JEMBRANA, NETIZENBALI.COM - The annual Idulfitri homecoming traffic has begun to pick up along the Bali–Java ferry route, with thousands of travelers leaving the island well ahead of the peak exodus period.

Authorities recorded 38,845 passengers crossing from Bali to Java over the weekend from Saturday to Sunday, signaling the start of the early wave of mudik (Eid homecoming travel).

On Saturday, the crossing logged 18,096 passengers and 5,961 vehicles. The figure rose the following day, with 20,749 passengers and 6,458 vehicles making the trip to Java.

Motorcycles dominated the vehicle flow, followed by private cars, buses and trucks. A similar trend was observed at Gilimanuk Port in Jembrana regency, where the number of motorcycles entering the ferry terminal has steadily increased over the past few days.

Gilimanuk Port Police chief Comr. Arya Agung Arjana Putra said officers had been deployed at several points to anticipate congestion as traffic volumes continue to rise.

“We have deployed additional personnel at several locations prone to queues. So far the situation remains under control and ferry services are running smoothly,” he said.

Some travelers said they deliberately chose to depart earlier to avoid the expected peak of the annual homecoming rush. Feril, a traveler from Jember, East Java, said crossing earlier made the journey more comfortable.

“For now it’s still manageable. The queues are not long and the crossing process is quite fast,” he said. Authorities expect traffic along the Bali–Java ferry crossing to continue rising in the coming days as Idulfitri approaches. (NB)
