SMSI Bali pledges long-term care for mangroves planted at Tahura Ngurah Rai
DENPASAR, NETIZENBALI.COM – The Bali chapter of the Indonesian Cyber Media Association (SMSI) has pledged to ensure long-term maintenance of mangrove trees planted during an environmental action at Arboretum Park in Tahura Ngurah Rai, emphasizing that the initiative will go beyond a ceremonial activity.
The organization will plant around 1,000 mangrove seedlings in an event titled “Journalists Care for Mangroves” scheduled for Monday, March 9.
SMSI Bali chairman Emanuel Dewata Oja, popularly known as Edo, said the program was designed not only to plant mangroves but also to ensure their continued care through periodic monitoring and maintenance.
“Many mangrove planting programs stop at ceremonial events. We do not want that to happen. SMSI will coordinate with rangers at Arboretum Park to carry out routine maintenance, possibly every three months,” Edo said in Denpasar on Sunday.
He expressed hope that journalists participating in the activity would gain firsthand experience of mangrove ecosystems and develop a deeper understanding of environmental conservation, particularly the importance of mangrove forests.
“Through direct involvement, journalists can see the real conditions in the field. That experience can strengthen awareness about protecting the environment,” he said.
Edo added that the initiative could later expand to broader environmental campaigns, including public education and waste cleanup activities.
Several corporations, associations and financial institutions have supported the environmental event, including Bank BPD Bali, Angkasa Pura Supports, Jasa Marga Bali Mandara, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport by InJourney Airports, Bhakti Rahayu Hospital, the Indonesian Waste Entrepreneurs Association, Bebek Bengil, ITDC and Pelindo.
The “Journalists Care for Mangroves” program is part of a series of activities commemorating National Press Day, observed annually on Feb. 9, as well as the 9th anniversary of SMSI, which falls on March 7. This year’s anniversary theme focuses on environmental awareness.
Edo also said the SMSI Bali provincial board has appointed the SMSI chapter in Tabanan regency as host of the organization’s anniversary celebration.
“At the provincial level, we are marking the anniversary through this mangrove planting event, which will be attended by representatives of Press Council constituent organizations. The Bali deputy governor is also expected to attend,” he said.
The 1,000 mangrove seedlings to be planted have been prepared by the Bali Environmental and Forestry Agency through the Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park (Tahura Ngurah Rai) management unit. (NB/*)
